It all began at the age of 12. I blame my father. He has circled an amazing deal for candy cars at our local King Soopers (Kroger) for my mother to include in her weekly shopping trip. He always scanned all the ads and picked out deals to keep within budget. He was always very budget oriented and taught me thousands of ways that always helped keep my company budgets as low as possible.
It was that particular day I had some weird idea to go with my mother and buy candy bars for myself, spending maybe $5 to do so. I then took those bars to my school, and sold them for $1 each to quadruple my investment. That, according to my version of events, was the start of it all. I ended up getting in trouble for selling in school, detention or suspension of some sort. But, the enjoyment never left.
As I grew older, I began working for my brother's window cleaning company. He was where the true spirit of entrepreneurship came from. My father had owned a couple businesses but always told us to get a degree and find a job.
Eventually, his company dissolved and I began my first licensed business, cleaning up dog poop, raking leaves, shoveling and other typical 16 year old tasks for the neighborhood.
I ended up using Craigslist "free" section to start my eBay company. I went through school and got a degree. I studied in Mathematical Economics as well as Spanish and Italian. My senior thesis was on Social Media Marketing, and shortly after I started my first unique, big boy company, Social Media Sage (which still operates to this day!).
I enjoyed the 4 hour work week, while making good money for a 20 year old.
At this time, cannabis became a real possibility in Colorado. I had been trying to figure out logistics with current restrictive laws for about a year until Eric Holder the Attorney General made his infamous announcement. Thus began Karmaceuticals!
As we ran and built up our dispensary and grow, I started multiple other companies. I retired around 27 years old, but at 31 felt I had more to do and started up new businesses. I now own roughly 30 operating companies, with more on the way.
My portfolio of companies I personally founded and operate include Real Estate, Short Term Rental Management, a liquor store, a grocery store, cannabis, car rentals, property management, home services, coffee store, social media marketing, local deals, online streaming video, event marketing, party bus rentals, and probably a few more I can't think of right now.
What will the future hold? Hopefully another retirement that lasts much longer! And more social equity companies!
