Millionaires Are Made

The Proposal Heard Around the WNBA

I just did something crazy! Yes, a little crazy makes life more interesting, and flying to Vegas to propose to someone random does just that!

Sometimes boys just want to have fun! This trip was MORE than that. Fun, adventure, friendship, and all-around stress relief (mostly via comedy)! About 10 years ago,  8 of my closest friends were watching a WNBA game. We started getting into it and (obviously) gambling on the winner. As we talked more and more about it, we all ended up picking a team to root for (Denver has no home team). I chose the Connecticut Sun, mostly because of the ridiculousness of the mascot and the location actually having a team over Denver. Like, I guess CT has nothing else, so the WNBA made a smart move there! We always talked about road tripping to the nearest team (Phoenix Mercury or Tulsa Shock) to see the game and spend a weekend. It never happened and was mostly just drunk talk.

Well, we finally made it happen. During March Madness, one of the TVs at the bar was showing a WNBA game. I researched it and saw it was the first time ESPN2 would be showing a game, and it was in Las Vegas, one of our favorite destinations. Within minutes, the 3 of us booked flights and bought tickets to the game. We had a month to convince the others to join us for a trip we will never forget.

It worked perfectly. as it was the day after Memorial Day. Flights were cheap, and the hotel was even cheaper. We did a short Monday to Wednesday trip, and started by gear for the game. We had a rule, the entire trip you must be decked out in WNBA attire. I bought all sorts of "sun" themed costumes, and couldn't wait.

As per usual, we like to challenge ourselves, up the ante, and make our memories even more insane/ridiculous/entertaining/memorable/exciting! At some point, I believe it was Dusty that said he wanted "Free Brittney" painted on our bodies. From there, I said I wanted her name shaved in my chest (as the hairy guy I am usually does). As days progressed, we kept talking about how to make the trip even more entertaining. At some point, I decided to propose to one of players with a giant sign. I also decided I didn't want the famous players, I wanted someone that could use some morale and a cheering section.

After much research, I chose a rookie named Nia. She was perfect! She just graduated and was just starting her career. She was gorgeous, and lots of articles talked about how awesome her personality was. She would be perfect, new to the league but fun and outgoing! Shit, if she says yes, it may be a match made in heaven!

During the game, she was on the bench as to be expected as a young rookie. But, in one of the most important games of the season, she was put on the court during the final few minutes. The section around me was excited. They all had asked about my attire and heard the story. As she took the court I heard 30 to 40 people around me start cheering Nia! Nia! Nia! and began joining in! I started getting messages and texts of me live on ESPN2. It was pretty surreal to be honest. Everyone was excited and into watching her.

The best part, she DRAINED two 3 pointers. She took charge in the court and made her presence known! It was awesome watching her and my whole section became fans. After her amazing performance we met up after the game and told her the whole story.  She laughed and the rest is history......
